This Chocolatier Created a Chocolate Flavor for Every State

Phillip Ashley Rix is living out a literal dream he had many years ago. It started with a visit to a Godiva chocolate shop with his mom, and then Willy Wonka showed up. It was a weird dream. “When I woke up, I knew that I would make chocolate for the rest of my life,” Rix says.

Rix will start shipping what he describes as his magnum opus: Taste of America. “I’ve always wondered what America would taste like if it were a box of chocolate,” he says. “So, I decided to create my vision for it. Each piece represents a state and has its own flavor: Sea Salt Kettle Chips and Pretzels (PA), Peaches & Cream (GA), CBD (CO), Old Bay (MD), PB&J (VA), Sweet Corn Basil (IA), and Bananas Foster (LA), to name a few. There’s even a “Scrapple” praline for Delaware made of pecan meal, applewood smoked bacon, and caramel. The 50-piece red- and white-striped limited-edition box

As for his past projects, the Phillip Ashley “Savoy,” a blue cheese bon bon, recently won the 2021 Good Food Award and is now his most requested flavor. Rix also created the 24-piece Phillip Ashley X Uncle Nearest collection in collaboration with Black-owned Uncle Nearest Premium Aged Whiskey. His Taste of Memphis collection tells the story of Rix’s birthplace in 12 unique flavors, such as Sweet Tea Caramel Vodka Lemonade, Peanut Butter Bourbon, and BBQ Chocolate.

The busy chef has also made tens of thousands of pieces for Hollywood elite, who have enjoyed his chocolates at the Emmys, Grammys, and Oscars. Last year, Oprah Winfrey selected his Perfect Turtle as one of her “Favorite Things.

“At the end of the day, we may look different, but we are all human beings trying to achieve our respective goals,” Rix says with a laugh, “and we’re all in this box of chocolates together”

A pickled garlic recipe that is over tiktok will be your new favorite snack!

Cloves of garlic hardly seem like a delicious snack, but when they’re pickled, for some reason they’re irresistible — at least according to just about everyone on TikTok right now. After TikTok user @LalaLeluu shared a 45-second snippet of her eating garlic by the spoonful while sharing her easy recipe, the trend has pretty much blown up on the app, with TikTokers creating their own versions and even having it for breakfast.

According to Lala’s recipe, all you need to do is drain a jar of pickled garlic — the kind preserved in vinegar, not oil — and add sriracha, Korean chili flakes, and thyme before shaking up the jar and grabbing a spoon. “I’m going to have a tummy ache tomorrow, but it’s so good!” Lala said between mouthfuls of garlic.

So, is this recipe really worth the tummy ache? I initially wondered along with the rest of the comments section, but after trying it out myself, I can confirm that Lala was clearly onto something, because this really is that tasty (and not weird at all, if you’ve ever eaten olives by the jar too).

In a follow-up TikTok, Lala explained that since the garlic is pickled instead of raw, it’s not as harsh of a flavor as you might imagine, and if you like kimchi, which is the inspiration behind this snack, you’re going to want to try this. Follow the recipe below and see for yourself, as your tastebuds might surprise you.

INGREDIENTS
1 jar (7 oz.) pickled garlic
1-2 tablespoons sriracha, depending on your spice tolerance
1 teaspoon Korean chili flakes, also known as gochugaru
1-2 teaspoons thyme to taste
DIRECTIONS
Drain the vinegar from the jar of garlic.
Squeeze in as much sriracha as you can handle.
Spoon in the chili flakes.
Add thyme to taste.

Black diamond apples that cost at least 7$each!

Named for its dark skin color, the Black Diamond apple breaks the red-and-green rules for most of the apples we see and eat. Though you might think this fruit resembles something from a fairy tale, we can assure you that black apples are real and safe to eat. They come from the Hua Niu—or Chinese Red Delicious—apple family, and although they don’t look like your normal Gala or Honeycrisp, black apples offer a crunch that’s sweeter than your standard varietal.

-What Is a Black Diamond Apple?
This variation of apple is easily recognized by its distinct dark skin, which isn’t actually black, but a deep purple. The bold color is due to the dramatic temperature changes in the growing climate. Black Diamond apples receive large amounts of ultraviolet light exposure during the day, with extreme temperature drops at night. The result? A beautiful fruit with dark skin and a bright white pulp.

-How Much Is a Black Diamond Apple?
The environment for growing Black Diamond apples is harsh, and it’s tough on the farmers who tend to them. Because of the mountainous climate, the seven to eight years it takes for Black Diamond apple trees to mature and the fact that they grow within a very limited time window, black apples are available for only about two months every year. You can expect them to be much pricier than what you’ll find from your local grocer.

Often, Black Diamond apples are only sold in high-end supermarkets in Asia, with individual fruits selling for between $7 and $20.

Lime Skittles are baackk!

Skittles has served up rainbow-colored candy since 1979. For decades, the packs of Original Skittles boasted a quintet of can’t-miss fruit flavors: orange, lemon, lime, grape and strawberry.

Suddenly, in 2013, that original cast changed. The classic lime Skittle was moved from the Original pack to the new Darkside Skittles variety, which featured tropical-tinged fruits like pomegranate, dark berry and blood orange. (Its name was also changed to “Midnight Lime.”)

In 2017, Skittles brought back lime for—gasp—a limited time. The lime Skittles were happily reunited with other classic flavors in the Original Skittles package. However, they came and went so fast, it feels like they were never really here. Now, Skittles has heard fans’ pleas, and they’ve gone above and beyond to respond!

What are blood sausages? And why are they called like that!?

Blood sausages have been a popular staple in many western cultures, but the fact behind its name will freak you out! Blood sausages are basically made with either cooked or dried blood and mixed with filler until it turns thick and attains a perfect sausage texture when it is cooled.

Interestingly, blood sausages have been a quintessential part of several food cultures around the world and are mostly prepared during special occasions. Here’s all you need to know about blood sausages and what makes them so popular.

The idea of preparing sausages with blood might seem bizarre, but they are believed to be one of the tastiest sausages around the world which attributes to their popularity. Secondly, the fillers used to make these sausages vary from, oatmeal and buckwheat, whereas in Asian countries the fillers are prepared with rice, sugar, honey, orange peel and spices, which add on to the taste and flavour of the blood sausages.

Origin of blood sausages

The history of blood sausages dates back to the 800 BC where a mention of Black Pudding was found in the 18 of Homer’s classic saga “The Odyssey.”

Blood sausages were also known as Black Puddings or Blood Puddings and were believed to be the oldest forms of sausages. The blood drained from the slaughter of animals was used to make these black puddings as it was the only way to utilize the animal blood. However, the use of animal blood varied from one region to another on the basis of food cultures. It was made in the form of puddings as it was one of the easiest delicacies.

Over the years, black puddings are popularly known as blood sausages are made by tweaking the fillers and by using different methods of preparation.

From the UK to Africa to Asian countries, there are popular culinary traditions associated with the consumption of blood sausages. While in the United Kingdom, Black Puddings made with oat and barley fillers are served for breakfast and special feasts and is believed to be nutritious.

On the other hand in many Latin American regions, blood sausages are also known as Morcilla, which are usually served at a barbecue and basted with spicy condiments to accentuate the experience. While in places like Estonia, these blood sausages are specially prepared with barley and blood and served for the lavish Christmas supper. That’s not all, in French culinary culture blood sausages also known as Boudin, which have been a part of competition- Brotherhood of the Knights of Blood Sausage Tasting, which is held yearly to celebrate the best blood sausages.
